This church in Magdeburg was dedicated to Saint Peter (Peter). Simon, nicknamed Peter (rock), was a fisherman on the Sea of Genesareth when he – together with his brother Andrew – was called by Jesus Christ to be the "fisher of men". According to Catholic understanding, he is the supreme apostle, and the two millennia-long line of popes – currently Francis – are his successors. On statues and paintings Peter is almost always depicted with two keys in his hand, this attribute refers to the Bible passage in Matthew: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; what you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and what you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (chapter 16, verse 19).
Peter is also known along with Paul as the "Princes of the Apostles", their common feast day in the calendar of saints is June 29th.

During World War II, Sankt Petri was severely damaged during the major air raid on downtown Magdeburg on January 16, 1945. Only the tower and the vestibule showed only minor damage.

In 1958, the Catholic parish of St. Sebastian's Church acquired the ruins. From 1962, as part of the Reconciliation Campaign, the church was first cleared of rubble and then rebuilt. The sculptor Heinrich Apel created several details of the new interior in 1968, in addition to liturgical objects, above all the vault keystone.

On November 20, 1970, the church was reconsecrated by Bishop Johannes Braun.

In the following period, further work was carried out on the interior. After the stained glass windows created by Charles Crodel in 1970[2] were installed, an organ gallery was built in 1987. On September 18, 1988, the inauguration of a Jehmlich organ took place.

On August 28, 1999, the church received the title of Catholic University Church.

On March 1, 2006, the Magdeburg-East parish association was established by the Magdeburg diocese, which included the parish of St. Petri, the Magdeburg parish of St. Andreas, and the parish of St. Cross in Biederitz.[3] In November 2010, the community group became today's parish of St. Augustine, named after St. Augustine of Hippo, to which St. Peter's Church now belongs.

It is planned to build a new Premonstratensian monastery next to Saint Peter. The university and future monastery church is to form a comprehensive atrium complex together with the new monastery, the community center and the Magdalen chapel.

Until the 14th century, the fishing village of Frose stretched along the banks of the Elbe to the north and outside of what was then the city of Magdeburg. Its parish church had been St Petri since the 12th century. The patronage probably refers to the activity of the Froser population connected with the Elbe, since the apostle Peter is the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen. In 1390, in the course of Magdeburg's urban expansion, Frose was incorporated, after which the church was largely rebuilt. Largely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War in 1631 and in the Second World War in 1945, the church only shows its old appearance on the outside. Consecrated in 1970 by the Catholic Bishop Johannes Braun, it has served as a parish and university church ever since.
