The architect Hermann Eggert was looking for a very direct architectural reference to the nearby cathedral when he designed the war memorial erected in 1877. But instead of a finial, the stone spire of the monument bears the replicas of an imperial crown and a sphaira, i.e. the imperial orb, placed on it. Going back to ancient ideas, its spherical shape symbolizes the world and the cosmos that surrounds it.
