The Werra rises in the Thuringian Slate Mountains. It meanders between the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön before it joins the Fulda to the Weser after almost 300 kilometers near Hannoversch Münden. The many brooks and rivers of the Werra system shape the landscape in the south and west of Thuringia as well as in parts of Hesse and give it a special charm.

The catchment area of the Werra and its tributaries covers a total of 5496 km². The Werra still has many near-natural stretches of water, especially in the upper and middle reaches. After all, around 20% of the course of the river can be assigned to water structure quality classes 1-3 (very good to moderately impaired). Most of these sections are in the upper reaches of the river. Despite a relatively large number of impassable transverse structures, the fish and macrozoobenthos fauna can still be found in a relatively typical composition. In particular, the clean and structured sections of the upper reaches, which can be assigned to the trout and grayling regions, form important reproductive habitats for gravel-spawning fish species. The Werra is one of the most important rivers in the Free State of Thuringia.

You can quickly get from the train station to the castle park via the Bleichgraben Bridge.

The Bleichgraben Bridge over the Inner and Outer Bleichgraben connects the Palace and the English Gardens. This is a steel truss arch bridge over the Bleichgraben on Karlsallee in the castle park, which was built in 2010.
