From the observation deck at the modern refuge you have a beautiful view over the old town of Meiningen and the Werra, which meanders through the valley and through the city.

The most famous vantage point with a beautiful view of the city is dedicated to the gallery and portrait painter and park designer Samuel Diez.

The Diezhäuschen was destroyed by arson in 2013 and rebuilt by the city of Meiningen in 2015.

The Diezhäuschen above Meiningen is only approx. 800 meters away from the old town / Elisabethenburg Castle.
After a short hike, a wonderful view of the theater town of Meiningen and the surrounding area awaits you here.
Samuel Diez, on December 19, 1803 in Neuhaus / Thür. Born, joined the Munich Academy in 1824 and, after completing his training, entered the service of Duke Bernhard II of Saxony-Meiningen as a court painter in 1832.
On numerous trips to Germany and other countries (Russia, France, England, Belgium) he portrayed many princely people and celebrities (Cl. Schumann, H. Heine) and created visual art depictions of events at the Meiningen court and numerous landscapes.
In addition to his work as a court painter, he devoted himself to creating and signposting hiking trails and viewpoints around Meiningen within the Marienverein founded in 1856.
The most famous vantage point with a beautiful view of the city is the Bielstein (Brückner Bildstein), 80m above Meiningen.
The hut built here is dedicated to the gallery and portrait painter and park designer Samuel Diez.
An old inscription plaque read "To the excellent person and capable artist Samuel Diez, who taught us to recognize and enjoy the beauties of the area - as a grateful memory".
Bielstein is a mountain name that can be found in many regions of our country.
It comes from the Middle High German verb billen (to cut).
Just as the brick is a baked stone, the Bielstein (mundartl. Bellstäh) is a rock that looks like it has been worked with a pickaxe.
In honor of the founder and first chairman of the Marienverein of the court painter Samuel Diez, the little house on the Bielstein was named Diezhäuschen.
The Diezhäuschen was destroyed by arson in 2013 and rebuilt in 2015 by the city of Meiningen.
