In 1797 the construction of a stables based on designs by the Hessian architect Heinrich Christoph Jussow began. The result was a structure with a forecourt, stables and riding house, which was not completed for financial reasons. In connection with considerations for a more representative design of the palace square, the demolition of the houses near the stables began in 1834. A large parade ground was created (today a parking lot).

Two decades later, all reconstruction plans in favor of a new stables south of Elisabethenburg Castle were abandoned. The only thing left was the riding arena, which continued to be used as such. Here the theater duke Georg II practiced step sequences on horseback, here his wife Helene von Heldburg received riding lessons. The riding arena was never a representative building. It was more like a mighty city barn. For this reason, the building was clad with festive decorations in 1910 on the occasion of the wedding of Princess Feodora from Meiningen to Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

In 1978 the riding hall was converted into a sports hall. The mighty historical gable roof was replaced by a flat construction, the porches designed according to the model of the festive decorations from 1910. After 1990 the building served as a temporary exhibition hall, and for a short time even as a domicile for a supermarket.

In 1998 and 1999, the plans that had existed since the 1970s to use the riding hall as a theater museum were put into practice. The work was carried out on behalf of the Meiningen city administration, generously supported by funding from the Free State of Thuringia. The conservation objectives of the renovation measures, especially the restoration of the historic roof shape, gave the building a previously unknown dignity.

It is integrated under the roof of the Meiningen museums and is run by the Meiningen-Eisenach Cultural Foundation. The museum building once served as a ducal riding arena.

The theater museum in the stables of Elisabethenburg Castle is a reminder of Meiningen's great theater history.

The theater museum is located in the castle's former stables. What seems unusual at first is actually a perfect fit! This is where the "magical world of the backdrop" is located, which can only be visited at certain times. The entrance door is locked after the tour begins. This visit is a 1-hour guided tour and presentation that consists of a personal explanation, a 25-minute documentary on the history of theater, and a presentation of a historical stage set. These change annually and date from the time of Duke George II, who made the Meiningen theater so famous. The historical backdrops look photorealistic and are skillfully staged with light and music. Thanks to the lively explanations, this is a very entertaining visit.
The waiting time until the presentation is bridged with costumes and sketches of the duke on display, as well as two huge, more modern theater backdrops on the flanks.
