In 1783, three packing houses were built at the same time in Tönning, Kiel-Holtenau and Rendsburg - at the same time as the completion of the Eider Canal, which connected the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. From 1784, these packhouses were to serve as goods transshipment points and storage areas along the new Schleswig-Holstein Canal (Eider Canal).
