In 1598, the pharmacist Wilhelm Wassenberg established a "well-equipped pharmacy" in Tönning (Nordfriesland district) "at the request and desire of good people." This is how it is handed down in historical writings. Even today, ointments and solutions are mixed, patients are advised, and medications are dispensed in the "Wassenberg-Apotheke": The business in the small town on the Eiderstedt peninsula recently celebrated its 400th anniversary. According to its current owner Zsolt Ludwig Ütö, the "Wassenberg-Apotheke" is thus the oldest on the Schleswig-Holstein west coast.

At the time of the founding of the Wassenberg Pharmacy, "barbers, hairdressers, surgeons and wound dressers" were still allowed to treat external injuries and even perform operations. The role of the pharmacist, however, was the same then as it is today, explains Zsolt Ludwig Ütö: "We do what promotes health." This includes advising patients as well as preparing and dispensing medications. For this, the Wassenberg Pharmacy received a special privilege from Duke Johann Adolf of Schleswig twelve years after its founding: to prepare and sell medicine.
