"... In 1822 Heinrich Liewerscheidt took over the Abtskücher Hof from his grandfather Barnscheidt. A few years later the restored tower stood, because on an old postcard from the years 1920-1925 a weather vane with the year 1833 can be clearly seen. This can only be as Confirmation that Liewerscheidt has placed the flag on the roof this year as the conclusion of the reconstruction of the tower as the crowning proof of his building activity.
But why does the weather vane today have the year 1537? The tower dome was refurbished in 2002 and the flag was replaced during the restoration. Now greet you from up there in 1537. Presumably they wanted to remember that this year the property of Abbot Johann von Groningen was structurally enlarged and that the chapel, which had collapsed not until 1759, was rebuilt earlier at the end of the 15th century. In 1537 the property was inaugurated by the auxiliary bishop of Cologne (see: Historia monasterii Werthinesis by Abbot Heinrich Duden, p.36 for the year 1537). This year the new chapel also received the altarpiece supplied by Master Simon. In the course of this celebration, the weather vane with the year 1537 could well have been installed as a reminder. In any case, you must have found something in a renovation carried out before 1997 that referred to this late medieval year, because it looked better on the tower than the later 1833 from the restoration period. ... Nice courtyard café with a great ambience and view but bad if you come by car.
