In 1710, the half-timbered chapel "St. Mary's Birth and St. Matthew" was consecrated in Altenhain. 200 years later it became dilapidated (caused by a thunderstorm), the chapel was demolished and replaced by a larger stone building - the foundation stone for the new church was laid on July 30, 1886 according to plans by Albert Boßlet, inaugurated on November 6, 1887

While the intro mentions general street parking in the village, for hikers planning to explore the longer trails, it's advisable to look for designated parking areas that might be available at trailheads slightly outside the immediate church vicinity. Street parking directly on Kirchstrasse can be limited, especially during peak times or community events.

Are the walking trails near the Catholic Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary (Maria Geburt) in Altenhain suitable for dogs?

Yes, many of the walking trails in the Taunus region around Altenhain are dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or near agricultural land, and to be mindful of other hikers and local regulations. Always carry water for your dog and dispose of waste properly.

What kind of terrain can hikers expect on the trails around Altenhain and the church?

The trails around Altenhain, being part of the Taunus hills, feature varied terrain. You can expect a mix of paved paths, gravel tracks, and natural forest floors. Some routes may include moderate ascents and descents, characteristic of a hilly landscape. Comfortable, sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walking routes directly accessible from the church?

Yes, there are several easy walking paths that start near the church and wind through the village or into the immediate surrounding nature. These are generally well-suited for families with younger children or those looking for a leisurely stroll. Look for shorter, well-maintained paths that avoid significant elevation changes.

What are some notable viewpoints or natural features to look out for on hikes near the church?

The Taunus region offers numerous scenic spots. While specific named viewpoints directly adjacent to the church aren't highlighted, many trails in the area lead to elevated positions offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including glimpses of the Main-Taunus-Kreis and potentially even the Frankfurt skyline on clear days. Keep an eye out for information boards along the trails that might point to local natural features.

Are there any cafes, pubs, or accommodation options in Altenhain near the church?

Altenhain is a smaller district, but you may find local eateries or guesthouses. For a wider selection of cafes, pubs, and accommodation, the larger town of Bad Soden am Taunus is a short distance away and offers more options for refreshments and overnight stays after your visit to the church and surrounding trails.

What is the historical significance of the church's baroque high altar and pulpit?

The baroque high altar (circa 1690) and the pulpit (1724 by Christopherus Boos) are significant because they were originally from the former Carmelite Church in Frankfurt am Main. After that church's secularization in 1803, these valuable pieces were acquired, preserving a piece of regional artistic and religious heritage within the Altenhain church.

How crowded does the Catholic Parish Church of the Nativity of Mary (Maria Geburt) or its surrounding trails get on weekends?
