The Balkan route ("Balkan Express") is the historical railway line from Opladen to Remscheid. The 28 kilometer long route leads - usually with some distance to the main roads - through Bergisch Neukirchen, Burscheid, Wermelskirchen and Bergisch Born to Remscheid-Lennep. It is a height difference - typical of the track very gentle - from about 50 to about 330 meters. The Leverkusen section (just under six kilometers) provides the important gap closure to the Rhine rail.
