The name "Berlaymont" comes from a convent of the Augustinian order, which was founded in 1625 by Marguerite de Lalaing Couvent des Dames de Berlaymont, which was housed in 1864 on the site of today's office building. On the site of today's building was the two-acre park of the Berlaymont Ladies Monastery.

The Berlaymont building was built from 1963 to 1967 and renovated from 1992 due to asbestos pollution. The European Commission acquired it in 2004. Today the offices of the President of the EU Commission and the other commissioners are housed there.
