An emblematic building of the European quarter of Brussels, it is the headquarters of the European Commission.

The cross-shaped Berlaymont, seat of the European Commission and whose appearance is typical of the 1960s, was completed in 1967. The four asymmetrical main wings and the huge esplanade below are relatively accessible, thanks to an ingenious supporting structure immediately stand out. The result: only the central axis is in contact with the ground. The different wings seem to float above the ground. Seduced? Opinions are divided, but it is impressive in any case.

The neighboring Schuman roundabout offers a view not only of this important symbol of the European presence in Brussels, but also of the brand new Europa building, seat of the European Council and of the Council of the European Union, nearby.

From 1995, the building underwent a major renovation, which was completed in 2004.

The building takes its name from the convent of the Ladies of Berlaymont. This order of canons was founded in 1625 by Countess Marguerite de Lalaing, wife of Count Florent de Berlaymont; the nuns moved to Argenteuil in 1962, after which the land was purchased by the Belgian state.
