The Medingschanze is a trench system in the Halberstadt Hills that was initiated by Captain Werner von Meding in 1916 and built under his direction. In order to present the then new trench warfare on the Western Front to the public and to provide financial support to war veterans and war widows, a trench system was built on public land based on the originals in Flanders, which all civilians could visit for a small entrance fee. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Halberstadt Hills were a very popular local recreation area with numerous restaurants for day trippers.
