The house Hohe Pappeln in the south of Weimar is an exceptional place that is worth calling. Just under three kilometers from the Goethe residence you can easily reach on foot or take the bus 1, which stops opposite the house Hohe Pappeln.
Designed by the House of High Papplen Henry van de Velde. Everything that surrounded Henry van de Velde, he designed. When he came to Weimar, he bought a bit of field and built a house in the countryside. He was looking for a new style. The unusual house that was built has something of a castle, a fortress whose staircase and access are not visible, thus signaling a private retreat! In front of the stairs are five maples in the front yard - combined with vine leaves, as if van de Veldes had five children in a circle dance. The house has many different faces, depending on which direction you approach it. There is the basement with kitchen, Beletage with study and dining room, above the living rooms and bedrooms, under the roof the maid. That's how it was a hundred years ago.
Van de Velde has designed yet more residential buildings in Weimar, one is in the Gutenbergstraße, where today is a Waldorf kindergarten, one in the Cranchstraße, the Villa Dürckheim.
From the Haus Hohe Pappeln there is a nice path through the Ilmpark to the Haus Am Horn, which was designed by the Bauhaus architect Georg Muche. From there you can quickly reach Geschwister-Scholl-Straße, where today's Bauhaus University houses Walter Gropius's director's office. The Bauhaus researcher Thomas Apel, who also organizes the Bauhaus tours, describes in this photograph the interior design of the director's room by the Bauhaus inventor: soundcloud.com/zeitwissen/zeit-wissen-thomas-apel-ueber

The Haus Hohe Pappeln was the private residence of the Belgian architect and designer Henry van de Velde. He had it built in 1907/08 according to his own plans for himself and his family and designed every detail. He created a unique work of art, whose representative living area and garden can still be visited today. And the best thing is: the house was built from the inside out. Hence the asymmetrical shape.
Van de Velde was a representative of modernism and a pioneer of the Bauhaus.

A house with its own architecture. Visits and a beautiful garden.
