The landscape of the Ilmenau valley is fantastically varied. It is determined by wide meadows and pastures, which are broken up by rows of trees, interspersed swamps and swamp forests. The idyllic heath river Ilmenau is a largely natural flowing water with numerous side streams. It is by far the largest and most important body of water in the Lüneburg Heath.
