Żarki is a small but old town located in the center of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. They derive their township from the 14th century, and in the 15th century the city privileges were confirmed by King Władysław Jagiełło. For centuries, the town was in the hands of mighty noble families, incl. Koryciński and Męciński. The nineteenth century resulted in the opening of several industrial plants in Żarki and the dominance of the city by the Jewish population, dealing mainly with trade and crafts. The consequence of the participation of the residents of Żarki in the January Uprising was the removal of city rights by the Russian invader. At the end of the 19th century, most of the town's population was engaged in small crafts and trade, but also in farming. The townspeople owned arable fields, meadows and pastures.
