One of the four gates of the fortress town of Neuf-Brisach:
The heavily fortified Breisach and neighboring Alsace were annexed by France in the 17th century. Because of the Treaty of Rijswijk, which ended the War of the Palatinate Succession, Breisach had to be returned to Austria in 1697. King Louis XIV therefore had a fortress built on the Alsatian side of the Rhine: Neuf-Brisach (1699 to 1708). The fortress builder was Sébastien Le Prestre Vauban. Neuf-Brisach was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the most modern fortress town of the 17th century and a masterpiece of military architecture.
