The hill on which Breisach is situated—the Münsterberg—was located in the Rhine until Johann Gottfried Tulla's correction of the Rhine during floods. In ancient times, it was the seat of a Celtic prince. Later, the Romans built a fortress here, and the Hohenstaufen dynasty founded Breisach in its present form in 1158.
