Kempen's largest town house from the 18th century was built in 1773 by the merchant Heinrich Horten and his wife Margaretha Bücker. Their initials adorn the wrought iron skylights above the doors. Merchandise was stored under the spacious mandard roof (which still has a crane on the courtyard side today), mostly food products that were sold as far away as Cologne.
After Heinrich Horten's death (1779), his son Josef Johannes expanded the business into wholesale, primarily with iron products from the Bergisches Land. In order to accommodate the expansion of the company and the increased prosperity, he added three more window axes to his parents' house in 1784.
