Asselstein Rock Formation

Peregrine falcons breed on the rock. If you sit still, you can watch them in flight.

From the eastern end of the Asselstein you have a great view of Trifels Castle.

The Asselstein climbing rock is a rock reef made of red sandstone that is 60 meters long and ten meters wide. The height is 58 meters. It is climbed by many climbers and there are several routes to the top. Many rocks in the Palatinate Forest are now breeding areas. At the beginning of February each year, rocks where breeding or breeding attempts have taken place in the last two years are closed. The breeding season of the peregrine falcon is around 32 days plus around 40 days until the young fly out. The rocks are usually released again on the first of July. As rock breeders in the southern Palatinate, the peregrine falcons rely on their natural breeding grounds in the Buntsandstein. They share these with other rock-nesting bird species such as the eagle owl and the common raven. All species are subject to strict protection.
