Saint Martin, to whom this house of God is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. Martin then converted to Christianity and was later elected Bishop of Tours (France) - initially against his will.

The Sint-Martinuskerk, main parish church of Aalst, will be thoroughly restored until 2027. Since 2020, the high choir and its art treasures have been taken care of. This part of the church is hidden from view by a fabric wall. Mattis Van Schuylenbergh and Alexandra Vanderbeke placed some of the art objects under restoration in a figurative shop window on the fence around the church.

Be sure to visit the interior of the church: you can find great indoor contemporary works of art by Isabel Bouttens and Wim Wauman.
The garden of Gistern en Morgen is an artistic creation by Blauwhaus on the restoration wall of the Sint-Martinuskerk. The 24 meter high wall separates the high choir, which is currently being restored, from the rest of the church.

Draftsman Isabel Bouttens and artist Wim Wauman brought the long-lost 'garden' of the sacrament tower to life in a cosmopolitan scene full of peculiar creatures. On the wall you will discover the many heritage stories that the Sint-Martinuskerk has to offer.
The impressive work of art follows the 4 seasons in the garden.
