Nieuwpoort was an important fishing port on the Belgian coast from the 12th century. Over the centuries, however, the port of Nieuwpoort has had many heights and lows and often changed function. In the 1960s the size of the Nieuwpoort fleet decreased and the port was given a new main purpose as a marina. The 1952 Municipal Fish Market was expanded to its current size in 1972.

In the morning there is always a lot of activity in the urban Fish Market. Several times a week there is a supply of fresh fish that is auctioned on site. You can immediately buy the fish that is traded in the fishmongers on the Kaai or taste it in one of the local fish restaurants. Promovis vzw supports the Nieuwpoort fishing industry.
If you would like to visit the Fish Market, you can do this via the From Spicy Brown to Gray Shrimp formula or via Friday Fishing Day.
Fishing boat Surcouf
Stroll along the quay and discover the Surcouf, an authentic and restored fishing vessel, displayed on dry land. The Surcouf fished for sole, plaice, cod, turbot, brill, dab, flounder, whiting and shrimp.
Straight from the Sea
Through this Visserij Verduurzaamt initiative you can find out where that freshly caught fish on your plate came from today. Follow the entire journey from the boat to your plate via the Straight from the Sea campaign. All information on the website below.
