The history of the Ebkens Mill

In the anniversary year of 2017, the Barßel windmill, built in 1892, was able to look back on 300 years as a mill site and at the same time on 125 years of existence.

In October 2016, the mill received the official monument plaque from the state of Lower Saxony

This mill building is an architectural monument in its overall concept, as the technical systems - gears and shafts - document the transition from pure wooden constructions to materials made of wrought iron or cast iron.

The construction of a post mill was first mentioned as a mill location around 1717-20, but was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1852. In 1854, a gallery Dutchman was built, which also burned out after a lightning strike in 1890, after which Friedrich Ebkens built the current mill in 1892. Instead of a wooden octagon on a brick base, the entire mill tower was made of solid brick.
