The Aper Tief is still influenced by the tides and boasts a very rare freshwater mudflat, a rich birdlife, and a well-maintained hiking trail starting at Hengstforder Mühle, where you can stop for a refreshment. The second half, however, follows a farm track, but it's also beautiful.

It is breathtaking of this landscape. It leads from Apen to shortly before Detern, where it meets the river "Jümme". You can drive well along the river.

Aper deep
The Aper Tief is a natural river course in the municipality of Apen. Coming from the east, it flows through the farmsteads of Hengstforde, Vreschen Bokel and Holtgast, before merging into the Jümme. Two retention areas have been created along the river, from which a fantastic nature reserve has emerged. Due to the connection of the Aper depth with the Jümme, Leda and Ems up to the North Sea, ebb and flow in this area are noticeable with a tide range of 60 to 120 cm.
Discover the freshwater mudflats in Hengstforde and the floodplain landscape in Holtgast with its diverse bird life while hiking or cycling. Anglers will also find excellent conditions here.
