After the fall of the Wall, Jürgen Litfin, the brother of the murdered Günter Litfin, campaigned for the watchtower to be preserved. On August 24, 2003 he opened a "Place of Remembrance of the Berlin Wall". The association he founded looked after the memorial site until it came into the care of the Berlin Wall Foundation in 2017. It is open from May to September on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

These watchtowers stood at regular intervals at the time of the Berlin Wall. Today only a few are preserved as a memorial.

Günter Litfin was shot on August 24, 1961 while trying to flee to West Berlin by members of the transport police. After August 13, 1961, he was the first victim of targeted shots on the border between East and West Berlin. The memorial wants to commemorate Günter Litfin and all other victims of the SED dictatorship who were injured or killed by the GDR border regime.

The memorial was set up by a private initiative in a former "command post" of the GDR border troops. It is supported by an association that the brother of Günter Litfin, who was killed, founded.

A foot and cycle path leads from the memorial along the Spandau shipping canal via the historic Invalidenfriedhof to the former border checkpoint Invalidenstraße. In the extension of the foot and bike path beyond Invalidenstrasse on Alexanderufer, the memorial stone for Günter Litfin with a plaque of the Berlin Wall history mile is located south of the railway bridge on the water.
