At the end of the last century, sand and ceramic clay were mined for years in the Loonse Waard. This has created a popular recreational lake, where you can also swim. After the high water periods of 1993 and 1995, the government made plans to improve flood protection along the Meuse. In addition, the insight arose to make the banks of the river more natural and nature-friendly in order to restore the habitat of plants and animals and thus improve the water quality.
