In 1360, Herpen Castle was demolished and a new castle was built in Ravenstein with the building materials. In 1818 the castle was in such a dilapidated state that it was decided to demolish it. The castle grounds have now been converted into a city park.
All that remains of the castle is a gatehouse from the sixteenth century. This gatehouse was expanded in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In the eighteenth century, the stair tower was demolished and replaced by a second floor with a stairwell. Since 1986, the building has been restored in phases.
