Until the beginning of the nineteenth century, the entire hill country south of Aarschot, between the centers of Nieuwrode, Houwaart, Scherpenheuvel and Rillaar, was still a real "forest". This forest had an area of several thousand hectares, with the Prinsenbos, Keyskortbos and Tienbounderbergbos as part of it. The Rillarian hills that you find here, like almost all hills in this hilly country, were created during the retreat of the Diestiaan Sea, which formed iron sandstone that prevented erosion of the hills. Despite the presence of the highway, the Rillaaarse hills form an attractive hiking and nature reserve with a lot of diversity, interesting geological features, good hiking trails, sound nature management and the new Hagelands Bos that was created with the purchase of 65 hectares in the Tienbunderbos as a base. Furthermore, there is also the presence of the Ijsbeek valley, where the wooded slopes play an important role in the water management and the ecological wealth of the area.
