A piece of history about this beautiful church:

In 1890 there were already over 40,000 residents in Remscheid, the village had turned into a city.

With the growing population, the task of building a new church arose for the evangelical parish. In 1891, the cornerstone for the construction of a church was laid on a plot of land donated to the community on Lindenstrasse, since 1934 Martin-Luther-Strasse, which was to bear the name "Lutherkirche". The church was consecrated just three years after the start of construction.

The Luther Church was built as a three-aisled hall church in the neo-Gothic style: the chancel is in the west, the tower with the main entrance is in the east, plus two small side aisles. The foundation masonry consists of bricks, the facing masonry with the various decorations made of different shaped stones, some of which are provided with different glazes.

There were originally three bronze bells in the tower, two of which were confiscated during World War I. After the war the remaining bell was sold and three new cast steel bells were installed, these are still in service today.

During World War II there was damage to the masonry, the roof and all the windows were destroyed. This damage was provisionally repaired in 1946 so that church services could be celebrated again. It was not until 1953 that a thorough renovation took place, colored windows were used again and the organ was redesigned.

In 1970 the interior was completely redesigned and a new organ was installed; the interior has essentially been preserved to this day.

The masonry and roof of the church building have had to undergo a lot of renovations over time, as rainwater has repeatedly caused damage. The roof was originally covered with slate, which was replaced by copper-coated bitumen welding membranes on the tower roof in 1966 and on the roof of the nave in 1980 due to leaks. These coverings also had to be replaced for the same reason.

The Luther Church has been a monument since 1987.
