"... The Gelpe Valley, together with the Saalbach Valley, forms a wooded local recreation area in the south of the city of Wuppertal on the border with Remscheid.
The two brooks Gelpe and Saalbach unite in the lower Gelpe Valley, known as the Zillertal, and shortly afterwards flow into the Morsbach, one of the larger tributaries of the Wupper.
Finds of ore mining sites and kilns in the Gelpe Valley, which according to the Historical Center Wuppertal are dated back to the 10th century, show that iron was already being processed in the valley in the early Middle Ages. ... "

After entering the Gelpe Valley, we are determined by the element of water. Especially after these three dry summers and so many miserably dried-up stream beds, this abundance in the truest sense of the word that accompanies us on the next four kilometers is simply touching and impressive.
Not only the Gelpe itself has an immense amount of water, also from every side valley and from Siefen there are rushing little brooks towards Gelpe. The course of the raging brook is only interrupted by the ponds that appear regularly, sometimes several in a row.
From the 17th century, the various hammers in which metal was processed were located on these.

Very beautiful valley where the stream of the same name meanders through the landscape and gently babbles and rushes. Very nice to go there.

The Gelpe Valley is easy to reach even for the "Solingen" and offers wonderful circular hiking trails with many information boards on the industrial history.

Danger!!!!! The main path to the Gelpetal coming from Clemenshammer in Remscheid is currently closed due to the flood in summer 2021. Dangerous cracks are said to have formed on the slope, which supposedly make the main path impassable. An article in the Remscheider General-Anzeiger from the 3rd week suggests that the road could be blocked for years because all departments are hopelessly overloaded.
