The Greifswald barrage is located in the cross-section of the Ryck federal waterway at the confluence with the "Dänische Wiek" in the Greifswald-Wieck district. It forms an integral part of the flood protection system for the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald. The approximately four meter deep Ryck has a width of approximately 60 meters and serves as an entrance to the city harbor of Greifswald. The main purpose of the largest technical coastal protection structure on the German Baltic Sea coast is to protect against flooding during storm floods, taking into account the conservation of the brackish water-dependent biotopes in the Ryck lowlands. A building was developed which is optimal in the area of tension between security, functionality, urban perception and costs. The barrage was inaugurated and put into operation on April 27, 2016.

An interesting building, without question. The storm flood in 2020 proved that it absolutely fulfills its purpose. A week after our visit, it was closed during the flood and protected the city from the masses of water 💪
