Built from 1235 to 1365, the Collegiate Church of St. Martin in Colmar is a major work of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The roof truss and the crowning of the south tower were destroyed in a fire in 1572. The three years later restoration in the Renaissance style gave the building its characteristic silhouette. After the French Revolution, the church was the cathedral of a diocese from 1790 to 1801 and is therefore sometimes referred to as Cathédrale Saint-Martin. The square surrounding the church is the Place de la Cathédrale, and numerous cafes and brasseries invite you for a break.
