Surrounded by beeches with bizarre visible root formations and almost littered with tons of leaves, one could easily overlook the three-part rampart and moat from the early Middle Ages on the Mühlenberg. But a signpost on the hiking trail and a detailed information board clarify the situation. A dreamlike setting!

Alt-Sternberg Castle is considered the direct predecessor of Sternberg Castle, which is still preserved today and is located approx. 1.5 km southeast. It consisted of a three-part wall and ditch system with outer works, front and main castle. The moats of the castle were originally up to 15 m wide and about 10–12 m deep.
Today only hills and ditches are preserved, which form a bizarre structure in the middle of the forest,
Archaeological investigations revealed cellar pits from five houses in the area of the approx. 1000 m² main castle.
Based on the existing finds, it is assumed that Alt-Sternberg was used from the end of the 11th to the beginning of the early 13th century. Written sources about the builders of the castle have not survived. Alt-Sternberg and Sternberg Castle were probably used in parallel for a certain period of time, with the older Alt-Sternberg Castle eventually being abandoned.

The old rampart is in the middle of the forest. In the past, everything was unforested and the view was clear for the lords of the castle around 1010. The five depressions on the main castle are cellar holes. A half-timbered house was built above each. The individual ramparts were protected by palisades. Neu-Sternberg was built 250 years later.
