The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Johannis in Schwerin is the only medieval building in the state capital. It is also the only real cathedral in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The 117.5 meter high west tower, which was built in the neo-Gothic style, is also the tallest church tower in East Germany. The church tower can be climbed with its 220 steps. Here the visitor has a breathtaking view over Schwerin and the Schwerin lake landscape.

The foundation stone was laid in 1171. It is one of the most important buildings in the style of brick Gothic.

In addition to the castle, the cathedral is the landmark of Schwerin. Especially when you look down from the Pfaffenteich pond, it towers over everything. A highlight of the brick Gothic.

The Schwerin Cathedral St. Marien and St. Johannis is a bishop church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany in Schwerin. He belongs to the main works of brick Gothic. With the Marienkirche in Lübeck and the Nikolaikirche in Stralsund it belongs to the earliest buildings of this architecture. Of the comparable buildings of his time he differs especially by his transept. The construction of other churches he influenced by the original design of the collegiate choir. It is the only real cathedral in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the only remaining medieval building of Schwerin. The cathedral has a long architectural history. After Henry the Lion had subjugated the lands of the Obotrites and defeated their ruler Niklot as part of the Wendenkreuzzuges, he restored the diocese of Mecklenburg, which had been orphaned for a hundred years since the Great Uprising rebellion. He ordered Berno for the first bishop. This moved the diocese of 1167 from the remote Mecklenburg in 1160 as a German city newly founded Schwerin. There took place on 9 September 1171 in the presence of Count von Schwerin, the Duke of Mecklenburg, the bishops Evermod and Berno and Henry the Lion himself the laying of the foundation stone to the predecessor of today's cathedral, which was consecrated after 76 years of construction on 15 June 1248. This old cathedral was one of the important works of brick Romanesque with the Lübeck Cathedral and the Ratzeburg Cathedral, both of which were donated by Henry the Lion. As Heinrich's foundation he belongs to the Löwendomen. After the demolition of the old tower nothing remains of the predecessor building as the Türmsüdportal on the southwest side of today's church. The dimensions of the Romanesque cathedral were significantly smaller than those of the Gothic new building. At about sixty meters, it was 40 meters shorter. Its tower, which towered above the old church, barely reached the height of the central nave of the new building.
