The Klausbrunnen was a fountain room at the foot of the valley slope on the edge of the floodplain of the Kallmuther Bach. It was part of the Eifel water pipeline that supplied drinking water to ancient Cologne.

The Brunnenstube was built towards the end of the 1st century AD and is part of the »Roman water pipe«, which supplied the Romans in old Colonia (Cologne) with around 20,000 cubic meters of Eifel water a day. The water pipeline, which is over 90 kilometers long and begins with the "Grüner Pütz" fountain near Nettersheim, is considered one of the most outstanding technical masterpieces of the Romans north of the Alps. The underground water pipe in the Brunnenstube in Kallmuth received another inflow. (Source: eiserfey.de)

Many Roman traces can be found in this corner of the Eifel. Those who are interested can continue their education on hikes

Very nice and interesting! In the photos it looks like you can go in there, unfortunately there is no access and you can only look through the bars from the outside! Nevertheless it is definitely worth it!

A bit disappointing. The memorial is behind bars and the door was locked. There is a parking lot right next to it. So you can also start a circular route from here.

On the trail of the Roman aqueduct from the Eifel to Cologne, it is definitely a highlight.

The Klausbrunnen fountain is a well-preserved Roman spring near the town of Kallmuth.

"The Klausbrunnen fountain near Mechernich-Kallmuth is a particularly beautifully reconstructed example of a Roman spring catchment. Like the spring catchments in Hausener Benden (1938) and Urfey (1951, 2010), the Klausbrunnen near Kallmuth (1935) was also discovered during the search for spring areas for water supplies in our day. It is astonishing that the Roman engineers with their simple means obviously came to the same results as we have with the methods of our time.

In the Kallmuther Klausbrunnen we find ourselves at the head of one of the three water pipe branches that were built in the first construction phase of the Eifel water pipe (80/90 AD). The fountain room with the basic dimensions of 3.5 m x 5.8 m is with its foundation up to in the former water-bearing layer in the ground. The spring water could penetrate into the basin at a depth of 3.5 m through the gate-like openings in the sandstone blocks and through the mortarless stone layers. The lintels and arches made of greywacke above these loose stone layers absorb the pressure of the rising masonry. The upper edge of the basin was covered with semi-circular sandstones; the basin itself was open at the top.

Below this spring catchment, the branch pipe from the Urft valley, built in the second construction phase of the Roman canal, was connected. The water from the Grüner Pütz, which did not meet the pipe starting at the Klausbrunnen at the same level, was led through a small stilling basin before the connection in order to destroy the destructive power of the water at a specific point and thus avoid damage to the canal masonry. The thick sintering layers in the area of the stilling basin indicate strong turbulence in the flowing water."
