This church was built from 1381 to 1487 as the church of sailors and fishermen. It is considered a late Gothic masterpiece and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of Wismar's old town since 2002.

Visiting the imposing brick church is very rewarding. Admission for adults is EUR 2.00. One of the numerous highlights is the bronze baptismal font from 1335 from the Church of St. Mary.

"The Nikolai Church was built from 1381 to 1487. It was the church of seafarers and fishermen. In it there was an extra altar for the schooners. The Nikolaikirche is one of the largest churches in Central Europe. Its long nave is 37 m high. In Germany is only the Cologne Cathedral a little higher. The tower of the church was 120 m high. A storm destroyed the pointed helmet of the tower in 1703. Parts of the pointed helmet broke through the roof of the nave and wreaked havoc on the interior.

The destroyed parts were then replaced by parts in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The Nikolai Church is still used today as a place of worship. It can be visited. The restored outdoor facilities at the church are also worth seeing. "
