The current St. Mary's Church was built in the early 14th century. However, a church building had already been built 100 years earlier.
The church was badly damaged in the last air raid in April 1945 and was demolished in 1960. Only the 80-meter-high tower remained. The entire site now serves as a memorial against war.

One of the oldest buildings in the city. After severe damage in 1945, the entire church was demolished except for the tower. The tower served as a navigation mark and was therefore preserved

The 80-meter-high tower of the Marienkirche is a landmark of Wismar that can be seen from afar. During World War II the church was damaged and in 1960 the nave was blown up. Until then, it was considered one of the most beautiful brick churches in Northern Germany. The former council church was probably built in the first half of the 13th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, a church twice as large and twice as tall was built over the existing church. The dials of the tower clock have a diameter of 5 meters. At 12.00, 17.00 and 19.00, the clockwork plays one of fourteen chorales on the carillon. (Source: wismar-tourist.de)
