Wismar landmark - Old Vault. The building, originally incorporated into the city fortifications, was built in the mid-17th century and had a similar predecessor dating back to around 1400. It underwent extensive structural alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was owned by the city of Wismar until 1823. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the foremen of the Ratskeller, the so-called wine lords, tested the quality of wines delivered from the harbor here before they were transported to the town hall. Later, beer was served in the vault by tenants. The use of the building changed when the entrepreneur Wesenberg relocated his fish and eel smokehouse here in 1864. The actual smokehouse, a three-story brick building from the 19th century, was located on the south side of the vault, but was demolished in 2000 due to its dilapidated condition. In the past, during city fires, the outflow from the pit into the harbor basin was blocked so that water could be dammed to extinguish the fire. This was done through iron gates brought in by the city's public works department. Around the turn of the millennium, the shop on the ground floor was modernized, and the northern gable received a neo-Gothic display window. During the renovation and reconstruction in 2003, the original facades were restored, and the plaster on the west side was removed. Today, the vault above the "Round Pit" houses very cozy vacation apartments.

The house was first mentioned in 1406 and is located directly on the Old Harbor. After extensive renovation, there are now 3 holiday apartments in this monument.

In 1660, there is talk of the "newly built vault on the water". The heads of the Ratskeller, the so-called wine lords, tested the wine that arrived by ship here. In 1664, the "upper logiment by the water" was leased to the Ratskeller tenant by contract, with permission to seat guests there and to serve wine and foreign beers.

Explore the city a bit and spend some time in the cafe by the harbor.
