Until 1945 there was no bridge here and no other way to cross the old arm of the Spree. It was not until 1945 that the Red Army built a pontoon bridge here to reach Müggelheim and Köpenick through the forest. The people of Hessenwinkl must have liked the bridge so much that they had a new bridge built in 1953... today known as the Russian Bridge. The bridge's wooden railing also has a somewhat Russian-Slavic touch.
