The Schavener Heide is characterized by extensive heather areas as well as oak-birch forests and mixed forests made from a wide variety of deciduous and coniferous trees. Most of it belongs to a military training area of the Bundeswehr. The site is temporarily used as a training area. The area is closed to hikers from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and sometimes also on weekends.
