The station was built by the Lübeck-Büchener Eisenbahn (LBE) company based on a design by the architect Fritz Klingholz from Aachen. The opening of the station took place on May 1, 1908 with the participation of the architect. The four-aisled platform hall is 130 meters long, 85 meters wide and spans nine tracks. With around 31,000 travelers and visitors per day, Lübeck's main train station is now the largest in Schleswig-Holstein.
Well renovated, after around four years of renovation work, the Lübeck train station has been showing itself to visitors since 2007. Deutsche Bahn AG has invested around 50 million euros. Among other things, the reception hall and train hall were completely refurbished for this, for which partly reconditioned original parts were used. The old post bridge was torn down, the pedestrian walkway that spanned all ten tracks was raised by 60 centimeters due to the electrification of the Hamburg-Lübeck railway line. The trains go through the main entrance of the entrance hall via wide stairs and elevators. In the entrance hall there are now seven new shops and snack bars on 500 square meters.
