  • With the takeover of the castle by Carl Alexander, the great-grandson of Anna Amalia, in 1842 began a second cultural wedding. The young Grand Duke had the two palace parterres redesigned to plans by Carl Eduard Petzold. Petzold also laid out the six-hectare landscaped park west of the castle and the large Forsthauswiese, which extends east of the valley floor from the old castle to the forester's lodge. In 1845, at the suggestion and under the guidance of Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau, the extension of Schlossallee, a branch of the old Jagdstern, took place to the so-called "Pücklerschlag".

  • On the north side of the Great Ettersberg lies the castle grounds of Ettersburg at the edge of the forest. Since the 17th century, the forest area was used by the Weimar Dukes to hunt. At the beginning of the 18th century, Duke Wilhelm Ernst began to build the castle, which was completed by his nephew Ernst August. From 1776 to 1780, the dowager dowager Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach held their summer court camp in Ettersburg and gathered around a literary-musical circle. With the takeover of the castle by Carl Alexander, the great-grandson of Anna Amalia, in 1842 began a second cultural wedding.

  • The castle complex of Ettersburg is located on the north side of the Großer Ettersberg at the edge of the forest. The Weimar dukes had used the forest area for hunting since the 17th century.
If you visit Weimar, this is worth a detour.
