Very close to the historic old town of Bolzano and yet surrounded by greenery is Maretsch Castle.
Nestled in an extensive vineyard landscape and with a wonderful panorama of the rose garden, Maretsch Castle can be found in the center of the city of Bolzano, more precisely on the water wall promenade. The building dates back to the 12th century. The oldest tower of the castle was built in 1194 by Berthold von Maretsch, according to written documents one of the representatives of the Counts of Tyrol and a judge in Bolzano at the time. At the beginning there was only the massive keep in the vineyards, which can still be seen today.
The complex was gently renovated in the 1980s, but is currently no longer inhabited. Today Maretsch Castle serves primarily as a trade fair, concert and event center, weddings are held here and in spring the traditional “Bozen wine tasting” takes place at Maretsch Castle.
