The 478-meter-high "Weimarer Hausberg" was the favorite hunting ground of the Weimar princes. Between 1706 and 1711, Duke Wilhelm Ernst had a hunting lodge built as a simple three-wing complex on the foundations of a canons' foundation founded around 1084 and later an Augustinian monastery in Ettersburg. In the middle of the forest, a hunting star, from which ten dead-straight clearings branched off, and a small rutting palace were built. One of the "avenues" led directly to the Old Palace and the Corps de Logis, completed around 1738. This New Palace, commissioned by Duke Ernst August, was surrounded by baroque parterres.
After her son Carl August came to power in 1775, Anna Amalia chose Ettersburg Palace as her summer residence. A handsome "sensitive" park landscape was created around the buildings. The ageing tulip tree in front of the rifle hall is still impressive today.

Beautifully located large aisle with a moderate gradient. Perfect slope for tobogganing. :-)
