In 1805 the "Patriotic Literary Society of the County of Mansfeld" initially intended to erect a memorial to the reformer Martin Luther in Mansfeld. Friedrich Wilhelm III also wanted a dedication to be set up in Wittenberg after the wars of liberation. The foundation stone was finally laid in 1817 and the monument was ceremoniously unveiled on October 31, 1821. The figure was designed by Johann Gottfried Schadow (1805), the base by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the canopy by the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV.

The name of the city of Wittenberg is and will remain - presumably inextricably linked - with the name of Martin Luther, to whom this monument in the city center is dedicated in a prominent place - the market square. The cabaret artist Konrad Beikircher, born and raised in South Tyrol, but has been based in the Rhineland for several decades, said in 2017 on the occasion of the Reformation anniversary in his cabaret program "500 years of false belief" about the date of the posting of the theses:

If Martin Luther had been a Rhinelander, he would never (!) Have posted his famous 95 theses on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg on October 31st. Because, October 31st is the quietest time of the year for every Rhinelander: Waiting for the eleventh in the eleventh.

Was inaugurated in 1821. The Luther memorial is the first statue in Germany dedicated to a civilian. Statue by Gottfried Schadow, base by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
