Since 1821, the Jewish community's synagogue was located in the old town of Bad Freienwalde, and its prayer room was destroyed during the pogrom night of 1938. At the site of this former prayer house, which was demolished in 1969 due to dilapidation, a new memorial in the form of a symbolic synagogue room was built right next to the Jewish staircase, which was renovated in 2006.

In 1819, the Jewish community in Bad Freienwalde bought a house in what is now Fischerstrasse and converted it into a synagogue by 1821. The community held its services here until 1933. When members of the community went to church, they used the "connecting staircase between Neuebergstrasse and Fischerstrasse" (the official name). The citizens of Bad Freienwalde naturally called it the "Jewish staircase". Since 1998, the staircase has officially been the street "Jewish staircase".
