Beautiful village not far from Nuremberg, a short stop here is worthwhile

The place was first mentioned in 1225 as "Heroltsperge", but the document could be a forgery. The first secure document comes from the year 1295. The modifier of the original castle name is the personal name Herolt, Herold.[6] The origins of the place go back to the 11th century. The Amt Heroldsberg served under the emperors for the administration of extensive imperial estates. From 1391 it came into the possession of the Nuremberg patrician family of Geuder von Heroldsberg for more than 400 years. The Geuders built four castles there, which still stand out today together with the former fortified church in the townscape: The Green Castle was built on the site of the original castle, the White Castle next to it in 1471, the Red Castle in 1489 and the Yellow Castle in 1580. Builder of the Red Castle Castle was the councilor and imperial mayor Martin Geuder (1455-1532), a friend of Albrecht Dürer, who made the pen drawing "Das Kirchdorf" during a visit to Heroldsberg in 1510, the oldest pictorial representation of the place, on which the new building can be seen in the foreground and behind it the historic town center with the Green Palace.[7]

The manor of the barons Geuder von Heroldsberg (Rabenstein) was sequestered by Prussia in 1796 together with the surrounding possessions of the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg. In the Peace of Tilsit in 1807, the Prussian principality of Ansbach-Bayreuth became part of France. With the Paris Treaty of 1810, the place came from France to Bavaria.

Of the four Geuder locks, the White Lock was sold in 1928 and the Yellow Lock in 1957; the Green or Rabenstein Castle (Kirchenweg 8) was occupied by the Rabenstein line of Barons Geuder von Heroldsberg until it died out in 1963 and was sold in 1977; The Red Castle is still owned by the Brunel-Geuder family, descendants of Geuder

Small town spread over a few hills. Almost always goes either up or down.
