The interior of the church is rich in art treasures. The centerpiece is certainly the altar with its crucifix. This is an early work by Tilman Riemenschneider. The church is surrounded by an old cemetery, which is fenced by a thick sandstone wall. The entire system was originally a fortified church or fortified church.

From Wikipedia: St. Matthäus is a 500-year-old Protestant church in the Middle Franconian market town of Heroldsberg. The 1477 as “St. Margaretha" first mentioned in a document of the Bamberg diocese received its present name St. Matthäus after the Reformation in 1525. The church building is nestled between the four Heroldsberg castles on a hill and is known for Albrecht Dürer's pen drawing "The Church Village" (1510 )
