The modern Romanian state came into being in 1859 through the unification of the principalities of Moldova and Wallachia. After 1945, Romania was part of the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War. It was the only Warsaw Pact country to maintain uninterrupted diplomatic relations with Israel. Since 1989, Romania has moved closer to Western European countries politically and became a member of NATO (2004) and the European Union (2007).
