In De Damvallei you can go hiking in nature, near Ghent. It is a low moor, formed by some distant meanders of the Scheldt. The marked walking routes take you past flowery, moist hay meadows, a large number of peat pits, willow and alder thickets. Two lakes define the landscape.

The Dam Valley is a low moor ecosystem, created by the former Scheldt Meander completely submerged. Centuries ago, about 50 peat pits were dug. Wet and dry soils alternate and seepage water comes to the surface at various places. The major eye-catcher in the area is the Damvallei Lake, an artificial water feature created by sand extraction for the construction of the E17 motorway. The local department of Natuurpunt had the steep banks flattened to create a wide muddy bank zone, in which reed and swamp vegetation with dragonflies, frogs and salamanders developed.
